The movie
Show notes
Welcome DISGUSTING MAMMALS to a very special Rewind Movie Podcast! On this episode we are delighted to be joined by the effervescent Em from the excellent Verbal Diorama podcast, who has rewarded our hospitality by bringing us the...fondly remembered 1993 video game adaptation SUPER MARIO BROS. Grumbling Britalian-American plumber Mario Mario (a visibly confused Bob Hoskins) and his Colombian/Calabrian brother Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo) follow sparky young archaeologist Daisy (Samantha Mathis) through a portal to an alternative dimension where dinosaurs, not simians, were the evolutionary forebears of the humanoid denizens of the cyberpunk trashland known as Dinohattan. Its leader is the slithery and ruthless King Koopa (crazy Dennis Hopper), who intends to use Daisy and her mysterious necklace to take over and rule our world. We delve into the bizarre origins of the film, the on-set fights over tone and content, and how that affected the final movie, as the directors’ dystopian designs clash with the family-friendly script commissioned while production was already in progress. With all this ground to cover, luckily we have our tremendous guest to keep us on track. Join Gali, Devlin and Em down one of those green tunnel-looking things as we take a deep dive on one of 90s cinema’s most famous flops. Will we unearth a rare and beautiful truffle from under the dirt, or does this mushroom deserve to be flambéed? You can find Em on social media @verbaldiorama, on her website at https://verbaldiorama.com/ , and of course on your favourite podcast platform!
