We're pausing our regularly-scheduled list of pairings to pay tribute to the late Sam Neill who passed away in mid-July, 2026. As we've done many of Neill's films already, we're going a bit deeper into his filmography for this pairing, starting with a horror film, the third in an unofficial trilogy. Directed by horror legend John Carpenter, 2001's "In the Mouth of Madness" is Carpenter's homage to all things H.P. Lovecraft! Neil plays John Trent, a veteran insurance investigator with a nose for scams and fraud. When publishing magnate Jackson Harglow (Charlton Heston) hires Trent to find his missing best-seller author Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow), he sends his best editor, Linda Styles (Julie Carmen) along for the ride as they attempt to find Cane. After a disturbing drive, they arrive in the lost town of Hobb's End, which is the setting for most of Sutter's books, but is a place most insist doesn't actually exist. There, things continue to get stranger as it becomes evident that the town is being besieged by some sort of ancient evil... or is it? Trent begins to experience things that force him to question the nature of reality and whether or not he's actually experiencing the things he believes he is! Also starring David Warner, John Glover, Berney Casey, Peter Jason, and Frances Bay!
